Welcome to the Art of Laser Cutting!

by Orkhan Huseynli 03 Jun 2026

Creating physical items from digital SVG or DXF files is incredibly rewarding. Whether you are crafting a complex Gothic hexagon box or a beautifully detailed Viking backgammon board, achieving a clean, professional finish is key. Here are some essential tips to elevate your laser-cut wood projects.

1. Beating the Scorch Marks Wood naturally burns when exposed to a laser, leaving dark, charred edges and smoke residue on the surface. To get that perfectly clean look:

  • Masking Tape: Cover the surface of your wood with wide paper masking tape before cutting. It catches the smoke and heat, and you simply peel it right off when finished.

  • Air Assist: Always run your air assist at full power when cutting to blow the heat and smoke away from the wood surface.

  • Light Sanding: Even with tape, a quick pass with fine-grit sandpaper is the best way to remove any stubborn scorch marks and create a perfectly smooth base.

2. The Secret to Perfect Joints When making 3D items that fit together, the exact thickness of your material matters immensely. Wood thickness can vary slightly depending on the batch or the manufacturer. For example, a standard sheet of 3mm birch plywood might actually measure closer to 2.8mm in reality.

  • Always measure your specific board with digital calipers before you start cutting.

  • Adjust the slots in your design software (like resizing a 3mm slot down to 2.79mm) to ensure your pieces interlock tightly without wobbling.

3. Make the Design Your Own Digital files offer incredible flexibility. You do not have to settle for standard layouts. You can easily remove pre-written text elements or generic labels from the vector layout in your software to create a clean, minimalist version, or add your own unique custom engravings before sending the file to your laser.
